Abstract

This study analyzes the mechanisms underlying the generation and propagation of structural noise induced by turbulent airflow in HVAC installations, as well as its overall impact on indoor comfort. It presents the main noise sources, structural transmission paths through building components, and technical mitigation solutions to reduce adverse effects on occupants. Furthermore, this paper presents two case studies to investigate the influence of turbulent-airflow-induced structural noise on occupant acoustic comfort and identify the factors governing its propagation within the building structure. The applied research methodology is based on characterizing noise sources in ventilation systems, evaluating turbulent flow regimes, and analyzing vibration and structural noise propagation through structural elements. These assessments form the foundation for proposing a specialized periodic evaluation procedure. The results, together with the evaluated sound insulation methods (Case Study No. 1), highlight the direct relationship between HVAC operational parameters, turbulence intensity, and perceived noise levels in occupied spaces. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that optimizing flow regimes and adopting appropriate structural measures can significantly mitigate acoustic discomfort. The novelty of this work lies in its integrated approach to the interaction among turbulent flow, structural noise, and indoor comfort in public buildings, emphasizing the decisive impact of HVAC operational parameters on building acoustic performance.
